    Monitoring young associations and open clusters with Kepler in two-wheel mode

    We outline a proposal to use the Kepler spacecraft in two-wheel mode to monitor a handful of young associations and open clusters, for a few weeks each. Judging from the experience of similar projects using ground-based telescopes and the CoRoT spacecraft, this program would transform our understanding of early stellar evolution through the study of pulsations, rotation, activity, the detection and characterisation of eclipsing binaries, and the possible detection of transiting exoplanets. Importantly, Kepler's wide field-of-view would enable key spatially extended, nearby regions to be monitored in their entirety for the first time, and the proposed observations would exploit unique synergies with the GAIA ESO spectroscopic survey and, in the longer term, the GAIA mission itself. We also outline possible strategies for optimising the photometric performance of Kepler in two-wheel mode by modelling pixel sensitivity variations and other systematics.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, white paper submitted in response to NASA call for community input for alternative science investigations for the Kepler spacecraf

    Response of the benthic fauna of an urban stream during six years of restoration

    Okeover Stream flows through the University of Canterbury campus and has been subject to restoration since 1998. While initially spring-fed, its main source of flow is now aquifer water, which has been used for cooling university buildings. Water quality is generally good, but the low-gradient streambed includes substantial amounts of fine inorganic sediment and organic matter including deciduous tree leaves. Restoration activities include riparian plantings, channel shaping, substratum manipulations and additions, the construction of sediment traps and macrophyte management. Thirty aquatic invertebrate taxa (13-19 per year) have been recorded in annual surveys since 2000. Paracalliope fluviatilis (Amphipoda), Copepoda and Oligochaeta were most abundant in all years, whereas Mollusca and Trichoptera always made up <4 % and <2 % of individuals, respectively. Furthermore, cased caddisflies were found only in the two (of four) downstream reaches, whereas Copepoda were predominantly in the upper two reaches where flow was generally slower. Low annual MCI (69-84) and SQMCI (3.5-4.8) values indicated the fauna comprised mainly species that are tolerant of poor water quality or degraded habitat conditions. Our data indicate that the invertebrate fauna has yet to respond positively to the changes in physical habitat and riparian conditions made along Okeover Stream. The introduction of pulses of poor quality water during heavy rainfalls, high levels of siltation, heavy metals in bed sediments, large accumulations of slowly decomposing leaves and an inadequate source of potential colonists may all contribute to the weak response of the invertebrate fauna to restoration activities

    Distinct NAD(P)H binding configurations revealed by fluorescence lifetime, anisotropy and polarised two-photon absorption

    NADH and NADPH play key roles in the regulation of metabolism. Their endogenous fluorescence is sensitive to enzyme binding, allowing changes in cellular metabolic state to be determined using fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM). However, to fully uncover the underlying biochemistry, the relationships between their fluorescence and binding dynamics require greater understanding. Here we accomplish this through time- and polarisation-resolved fluorescence and polarised two-photon absorption measurements. Two lifetimes result from binding of both NADH to lactate dehydrogenase and NADPH to isocitrate dehydrogenase. The composite fluorescence anisotropy indicates the shorter (1.3-1.6ns) decay component to be accompanied by local motion of the nicotinamide ring, pointing to attachment solely via the adenine moiety. For the longer lifetime (3.2-4.4ns), the nicotinamide conformational freedom is found to be fully restricted. As full and partial nicotinamide binding are recognised steps in dehydrogenase catalysis, our results unify photophysical, structural and functional aspects of NADH and NADPH binding and clarify the biochemical processes that underlie their contrasting intracellular lifetimes

    Home versus hospital-based cardiac rehabilitation: A systematic review

    Comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation has positive effects on many cardiac risk factors (physical activity, smoking status, cholesterol, anxiety and depression) and can lead to improvements in mortality, morbidity and quality of life. Most formal cardiac rehabilitation in the UK is offered within a hospital or centre setting, although this may not always be convenient or accessible for many cardiac patients, especially those in remote areas. The proportion of eligible patients who successfully complete a cardiac rehabilitation program remains low. There are many reasons for this but geographical isolation and transport issues are important. This systematic review examines the current evidence for home- versus hospital-based cardiac rehabilitation. Home-based cardiac rehabilitation offers greater accessibility to cardiac rehabilitation and has the potential to increase uptake. While there have been fewer studies of home-based cardiac rehabilitation, the available data suggest that it has comparable results to hospital-based programs. Many of these studies are small and heterogeneous in terms of interventions but home-based cardiac rehabilitation appears both safe and effective. Available evidence suggests that it results in longer lasting maintenance of physical activity levels compared with hospital-based rehabilitation and is equally effective in improving cardiac risk factors. Furthermore, it has the potential to be a more cost-effective intervention for patients who cannot easily access their local centre or hospital. Currently home-based cardiac rehabilitation is not offered routinely to all patients but it appears to have the potential to increase uptake in patients who are unable, or less likely, to attend more traditional hospital-based cardiac rehabilitation programs

    Better by design: Rethinking interventions for better environmental regulation

    etter regulation seeks to extend existing policy and regulatory outcomes at less burden for the actors involved. No single intervention will deliver all environmental outcomes. There is a paucity of evidence on what works why, when and with whom. We examine how a sample (n=33) of policy makers select policy and regulatory instruments, through a case study of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), UK. Policy makers have a wide range of instruments at their disposal and are seeking ways to harness the influence of non-governmental resources to encourage good environmental behaviour. The relevance of each influence varies as risk and industry characteristics vary between policy areas. A recent typology of policy and regulatory instruments has been refined. Direct regulation is considered necessary in many areas, to reduce environmental risks with confidence and to tackle poor environmental performance. Co-regulatory approaches may provide important advantages to help accommodate uncertainty for emerging policy problems, providing a mechanism to develop trusted evidence and to refine objectives as problems are better understood

    The GEEC2 spectroscopic survey of Galaxy Groups at 0.8<z<10.8<z<1

    We present the data release of the Gemini-South GMOS spectroscopy in the fields of 11 galaxy groups at 0.8<z<10.8<z<1, within the COSMOS field. This forms the basis of the Galaxy Environment Evolution Collaboration 2 (GEEC2) project to study galaxy evolution in haloes with M1013MM\sim 10^{13}M_\odot across cosmic time. The final sample includes 162162 spectroscopically--confirmed members with R50R50 per cent complete for galaxies within the virial radius, and with stellar mass Mstar>1010.3MM_{\rm star}>10^{10.3}M_\odot. Including galaxies with photometric redshifts we have an effective sample size of 400\sim 400 galaxies within the virial radii of these groups. We present group velocity dispersions, dynamical and stellar masses. Combining with the GCLASS sample of more massive clusters at the same redshift we find the total stellar mass is strongly correlated with the dynamical mass, with logM200=1.20(logMstar12)+14.07\log{M_{200}}=1.20\left(\log{M_{\rm star}}-12\right)+14.07. This stellar fraction of  1~\sim 1 per cent is lower than predicted by some halo occupation distribution models, though the weak dependence on halo mass is in good agreement. Most groups have an easily identifiable most massive galaxy (MMG) near the centre of the galaxy distribution, and we present the spectroscopic properties and surface brightness fits to these galaxies. The total stellar mass distribution in the groups, excluding the MMG, compares well with an NFW profile with concentration 44, for galaxies beyond 0.2R200\sim 0.2R_{200}. This is more concentrated than the number density distribution, demonstrating that there is some mass segregation.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS.     Isolated and non-isolated dwarfs in terms of modified Newtonian dynamics

    Within the framework of modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) we investigate the kinematics of two dwarf spiral galaxies belonging to very different environments, namely KK 246 in the Local Void and Holmberg II in the M81 group. A mass model of the rotation curve of KK 246 is presented for the first time, and we show that its observed kinematics are consistent with MOND. We re-derive the outer rotation curve of Holmberg II, by modelling its HI data cube, and find that its inclination should be closer to face-on than previously derived. This implies that Holmberg II has a higher rotation velocity in its outer parts, which, although not very precisely constrained, is consistent with the MOND prediction.Comment: Accepted in A&A as a Research Note. 6 pages, 3 figure

    Spiral Galaxies Rotation Curves with a Logarithmic Corrected Newtonian Gravitational Potential

    We analyze the rotation curves of 10 spiral galaxies with a newtonian potential corrected with an extra logarithmic term, using a disc modelization for the spiral galaxies. There is a new constant associated with the extra term in the potential. The rotation curve of the chosen sample of spiral galaxies is well reproduced for a given range of the new constant. It is argued that this correction can have its origin from string configurations. The compatibility of this correction with local physics is discussed.Comment: Latex file, 6 pages, 20 figure
